Beloved Emcee and costume goddess Cora Vette, owner of Denver’s one stop burlesque shop VaVa Vette, gives us the lowdown on how to create your own custom fashions.

Do you want to instantly have the look of a rockabilly pin up model? This D.I.Y. will show you how to make the perfect head wrap, headband, headscarf, (whatever you want to call it) to turn your hairdo into pin up perfection.

You can adjust this wrap to whatever length and width you like. I took the measurement of my head plus 16 inches to have enough extra at the ends to tie. This D.I.Y. shows a 3-inch finished width, but you can make it as wide as you want.

Step 1.

Decide your length and width and cut 2 strips of fabric. Be sure to account for your seam allowances by adding about 1.25 inches to your desired final length and width.

Step 2.

Lay one strip on top of the other, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER. Fold both pieces together in half lengthwise, and cut the end segments on both sides off to a taper. These will be the ends of your wrap.

Step 3.

Unfold, pin pieces in place, and sew a 5/8 inch straight stitch seam around the edges. Raise your presser foot with the needle down and pivot at the ends, to continue around the wrap.  Be sure to leave an unsewn gap in the center of one of the sides to turn the wrap right side out.

Step 4.

Trim the edges (leaving the open gap untrimmed).

Step 5.

Turn the wrap right side out, tuck in the untrimmed section of fabric, and press.

Step 6.

Finally, edge stitch around the entire wrap to finish.

Step 7.

Tie it around your head and be fabulous!

This wrap is perfect for cleaning your house (ha!), hiding a bad hair day, or adding that vintage touch to any outfit.

Until next time, Happy Sewing!
